Born in Sydney, raised in Malaysia and rural NSW, Doug Thost now calls Hobart "home". Having borrowed his fathers camera at the age of 12, and neglecting to give it back, his photographic career began at high school, spending hours inhabiting the dark room and experimenting with black and white printing.
A background in geology and glaciology has given him access to that most amazing of continents, Antarctica, which he has visited 18 times since 1987. He has been shooting landscape and wilderness images for over 20 years, specialising in cold-weather and remote locations using 35mm, medium format panorama, and digital cameras.
In 2006 he was awarded the Arts Tasmania Cultural Residency at Lake St Clair National Park, where he enjoyed two months freedom to explore, and attempt to incorporate, the often-ignored human element in wilderness photography. His current projects include portraits of men and women who spend their life flying, and aerial photographs of Tasmania's more remote regions. You can see a portfolio of his work

Based in Hobart, I offer a range of affordably-priced photographic services. Although I specialise in remote-area and aerial photography, I also cover portraiture, weddings, special events, artwork and architectural photography.
My style is to use natural lighting, and natural locations, rather than the studio. I prefer candid rather than posed, documentary rather than formal.

::: WEDDING PACKAGES FROM $1500 :::
For the bride & groom who want professional photography at an affordable price. I'm happiest at quirky outdoor weddings that benefit from my passion for documentary-style, unobtrusive wedding photography. I love capturing those wonderful fleeting moments that define the day for you both. Minimum charge includes:
Five hours coverage on the day. Usually this would include the groom & groomsmen awaiting the arrival of the bride at the ceremony location, arrival of the bride at the ceremony, the ceremony itself, group shots afterwards & early reception photos.
Extra hours (if required) cost $90 per hour or part thereof, and could include bridal preparation, and more photos at the reception.
A DVD containing printable high quality pictures. These will be provided to you, usually within two weeks.
WEDDING EXTRAS
For an additional $330 I edit and retouch the photos, which makes a huge difference to the "feel" of the images. See my wedding section for examples... This additional charge includes a website containing your photos which will be online for you and your friends to view as soon as possible after the event, and will remain online for 30 days. The edited photos are included on the DVD provided to you as part of the package.
For an additional $450, I produce a high quality hard cover 30 page photo book of the day. Discounts apply for a second or third book ordered at the same time. I was awarded a "silver" in the TPPY awards for my wedding album in 2010!

Your professional casting shot (headshot) is what is going to get you noticed. Without a decent headshot your chances of getting into the right casting are slim. Sitting fee $120 for up to 1.5 hours of photography (Hobart metropolitan area), CD of high resolution images $440.

Document your special event, conference, party, anything! $150 per hour (minimum 2 hours) includes high resolution images provided on CD/DVD for you or your organisation to print or archive. (NB travel charges may apply).

Viewing the world from above has an unrivalled impact. As a photographer who is also a commercial pilot, I can advise you on the best way of realising your aerial vision. In Hobart I work closely with Tasair and Helicopter Resources to provide you with a range of solutions to meet your budget.

For art students as well as recognised practitioners, getting good images (that you can afford!) of your works can be a struggle. I have been photographing intricate sculptural work for years for artists resumes and grant applications. Contact me directly to see if I can accomodate your works (size dependant), and for a quote.
